"Was Mythal's death the cause of the chaos or simply a symptom?" For all of Solas saying that they weren't gods, that doesn't change the fact that the elven pantheon must have been powerful enough to be thought of as a pantheon by future generations. And at least in Strange's eyes, the death of someone that powerful would be a logical point for chaos and civil war to spring from.
